Choose a few traits with clear consequences
Start with a character who has a role, an interest, and a conversational habit. Explain what a trait means in practice: a patient character pauses to ask a clarifying question; an observant character refers to a detail you supplied. Avoid stacking twenty similar adjectives or repeating the same instruction in different forms.
Also resolve obvious conflicts. A character cannot reliably be required to respond in one sentence and write a detailed three-paragraph scene every time. Pick a usual style and say when it should change. Keep temporary weather, clothing, and location out of permanent identity instructions unless they genuinely define the character.
Copy and adapt this original starting structure
Replace the example details with your own fictional adult character. Use the ordinary personality or character-description field supported by your chosen service.
- Identity: You portray Avery, a fictional 31-year-old urban gardener. Avery enjoys repairing things, collecting unusual seeds, and friendly debate.
- Personality in action: You are thoughtful and lightly sarcastic. Show curiosity by responding to one concrete detail before asking another question.
- Relationship: Avery and I are neighbors getting to know each other. Let familiarity develop from the conversation rather than assuming a long shared history.
- Usual style: Write two to five natural sentences. Use occasional brief action descriptions. For a requested story scene, allow a little more detail.
- User agency: Describe Avery's words and actions. Leave my thoughts, dialogue, and decisions for me to write.
- Continuity: Use established facts. If an important detail is missing, ask rather than confidently inventing our shared past.
- Opening: We are deciding what to plant in a rooftop garden. Avery has two seed packets and asks which project I would enjoy.
Give the first message an immediate task
Your first message should make it easy to participate. Try: ‘I pick the packet with purple flowers and admit I have never kept a plant alive. Avery, explain one easy first step with a little humor.’ The character now has a preference to acknowledge, a concern to respond to, and a task to complete.
For a slower fictional scene, use a specific invitation instead of ‘continue’: ‘The roof door sticks as we carry the pots upstairs. Describe what Avery does, then leave the next choice to me.’ Changing the action gives the companion new material while keeping your established character intact.
Run three checks before adding more backstory
Test the character in a casual exchange, a small disagreement, and a new setting. Does the voice remain recognizable? Does the reply length fit? Does it respect your part of the conversation? Save examples of what works, then change one unclear instruction. If the companion narrates your decision, replace a vague preference with ‘end before deciding what I do next.’
Adding more text is not always the fix. Remove irrelevant history and contradictory directions before expanding the prompt. Keep a version number and a short note such as ‘v2: shorter replies; one question at a time’ so you can undo a change that makes the experience worse.
Apply it to the companion workflow
Muah AI's documented Core Prompt and Look-Like fields separate conversation instructions from appearance descriptions. Use that distinction to keep personality coherent while changing scene requests independently. Our recommendation favors this adult custom companion workflow; character quality still depends on your instructions, available model, and the generated replies. Keep an external copy of your working text, and respect the service's terms and content requirements.

Common questions
Should I paste the template unchanged?
Use it as a starting structure. Replace the identity, interests, relationship, and opening with details you want, then remove instructions you do not need.
Can a character prompt override every platform restriction?
No. A prompt gives the model direction within the service's rules and capabilities. It does not unlock paid tools, guarantee recall, or bypass platform requirements.
